The need

It was observed that, women from the unorganised sector in India are socially and economically weak and they need an organisation which would help them find a proper base for work and thus improve their overall living conditions. For a very long time, there was a need for such an organisation that would bring the much needed change in the lives of such women. Mrs. Shaila Limaye and her associates thought that there was no point in waiting for such an organisation to start and instead took the initiative in the year 2002 and Majhi Maitrin was born.

The initial years

Mrs. Limaye did not know how and where to start, when she was given charge of the Unorganised Sector of Labour by Maharashtra INTUC, as she had always worked in the Organised Sector. During her survey of Unorganised Sector, she realized about the three basic needs of women in this sector - social, psychological and mainly financial security. Therefore we started SECOW, a project to empower women through self-employment. But at the time as even now such projects, however good, are not "Union Activity", hence did not get any financial support. So we formed Majhi Maitrin Charitable Trust. Keeping in mind the needs of the women, MMCT decided to focus on the following:

  • Literate the poor women and organize them to pool their meager resources and use them for their own development
  • Standardise their products and servises by giving them training in various income-generating activities
  • Provide or create market opportunities for their products and services by establishing Majhi Maitrin brand in the society
